Low Back Pain

Many things can cause lower back pain, and many times, not just one thing. The lower back is made up of five bones we call vertebra. These five vertebra also called lumbar vertebra stack on top of each other like children’s wooden building blocks. In-between each of these five vertebra is an intervertebral disk. The disk has several functions, one of those functions is to keep the bones of the low back from rubbing against each other. The intervertebral discs also act as shock absorbers.  One of the other functions of the inter-vertebral disks is to help make room for the nerves to exit out from the spine and travel to where these exiting nerves need to go.

Sitting too long, standing too long, walking, sleeping on surfaces that do not properly support our spines, weight gain, and improper footwear are just some of the things that can cause spinal bones to lose their proper alignment. These and many other things can put pressure on disks, cause pinched nerves and contribute to low back pain. Activities of daily living such as the jobs we do or the tasks we do during our day can contribute to low back pain. It’s what we call multifactorial causes or a whole lot of stuff !!!

The symptoms of low back problems can vary. Radiating leg pain called sciatica is common. Piriformis syndrome or pain in the butt is common. Hip pain also can be a related symptom with or without the low back pain. Low back problems can cause difficulty in walking.

Your Chiropractor is well trained in the diagnosis of low back problems. Dr. Crystal will complete a thorough Orthopedic, Chiropractic, and neural exam. This exam will determine the cause of your lower back pain or its associated symptoms. Your Chiropractor may or may not use X-rays to determine the cause or contribution of bony structures in the cause of your pain. Many times lower back pain can be as simple as small mis-positions, misalignment of spinal bones called subluxations. Other times serious more complicated issues are causing pain. Bulging or herniated discs are an example of serious and complicated issues. Pinched nerves or even bone degeneration of your low back vertebra can lead to serious complications if left untreated. The degeneration of spinal bones is degenerative disc disease (DJD) of the spine, sometimes referred to as arthritis.

Your Chiropractor is trained to take care of these serious conditions and to make referrals if necessary. Your Chiropractor will use Chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, flexion distraction, or other Chiropractic techniques to treat your pain. You will always have choices along the way.  Many people come into Chiropractic care because of failed spinal surgery or failed back surgery. Your Chiropractor will do a full exam, treat the cause of your pain, and get you feeling better even if yours is a serious or more complicated case.

Many studies show that the use of Chiropractic care is the preferred method for treating low back pain. Chiropractic care is the first choice for care for many people.
